VennCAD Files

The best tool in the world for a deep dive into a mouthpiece, bar none, is VennCAD. Zoom in on the geometry, research dimensions and acoustical properties, and compare it to other models. And if you don’t like it as is – go ahead and customize it so you can order it just like you want it.

mĕ·lō is the product of a unique collaboration between Orlando-based mellophonist and mechanical engineer Jared Webber and Vennture lead engineer Doug McVey. Designed from the ground up in Vennture’s VennCAD mouthpiece design package, mĕ·lō unlocks the full artistic and technical capabilities of the instrument.

Stop using a repurposed trumpet mouthpiece or a French horn mouthpiece in a janky adapter.

Your instrument may be the red-headed stepchild of the brass world, but your mouthpiece doesn’t have to be.

Why We Did It

The mellophone as an instrument does no favors to the performer. From the physical balance and visual restrictions due to the large bell and associated flare, to the intonation challenges brought upon by design compromises, the mellophone is one of the toughest instruments to excel at in the marching arts.

In an activity where the term “good enough” is not accepted – why do we then accept the limitations imposed on the mellophone?

At its core, mĕ·lō is marked improvement from existing mouthpiece options, and ultimately only enhances your brass pedagogy.  The standard mĕ·lō line enhances the tessitura of the instrument, eliminating the sound distortion in the lower register without impeding the upper register. Dynamic contrast is increased, as higher dynamic levels are achievable before sound quality degrades. The deeper (M1D, M5D, M6D, M5D-F) line creates a sound that is yet to be heard on the field, rich yet vibrant, capable of adapting to the musical and physical demands on the performer; a flexibility that could not be offered by suffocating ultra-high mass mouthpieces. Every design choice had intonation in mind, reducing the need for varying embouchure setups throughout the range of the horn.

mĕ·lō is dynamic – adaptable to all music styles and brass instructional philosophies.

mĕ·lō decouples the rim from the cup & throat, truly creating a mouthpiece line that adapts to both the player’s and instructors needs; no more is there a compromise between what is considered comfortable and what sound the instrument makes.
